Bookmarked is the Book Intelligence Company. We build the intelligence layer that helps K-12 districts manage, understand, and grow their library collections — so librarians can get back to matching books with readers, and districts can move forward with confidence instead of fear.
We started in compliance because that’s where the crisis was. We’re building toward discovery because that’s where the mission leads.
Our Story
Steve Wandler didn’t graduate high school. Not because he didn’t care — because nobody understood how he learned. He wasn’t diagnosed until his own son Noah was tested in elementary school, more than 20 years after it would have mattered most.
But his daughter Faith showed him the other side. She helped him find a book he actually wanted to read — connecting it to a movie he already loved, suggesting audiobooks alongside text. “Dad, people don’t read more because they haven’t found the right book.” She was right.
Faith was the first Book Intelligence engine. She matched a reader with the right book through what he already connected with. That insight became the founding conviction of Bookmarked.
The Market
When Texas passed SB 13, the K-12 book market didn’t just slow down. It froze. Publishers stopped getting orders. Librarians stopped buying new titles. Districts paralyzed by compliance uncertainty chose the safest option: do nothing.
The result? A generation of students with shrinking libraries, fewer choices, and less access to the stories that shape who they become. And it wasn’t just Texas — twenty-six states passed similar legislation.
What We Built
Bookmarked was built to unfreeze that market. Not with another compliance checklist — with intelligence.
Book Intelligence aggregates everything publicly known about a book — professional reviews, awards, ratings, content advisories, news coverage — and organizes it for decision-making. OnShelf, our platform, puts that intelligence to work across four modules:
Digital committee workflows with defensible records of every decision.
Visibility into every book across the district — one inventory, one compliance record.
Transparent window for parents into collections, reviews, and policies.
Real-time collection health, compliance status, and analytics.
The Intelligence
Professional reviews, awards, ratings, content advisories, and news coverage. Everything publicly known about a book, compiled and cited.
Aggregated, anonymized insights from across 150+ districts. Individual district data stays private — the network-level insights benefit everyone.
A future capability that will analyze actual book content — with publisher permission. Currently in development. Always described separately from current Book Intelligence.
Bookmarked partners with 9 Education Service Centers across Texas — a distribution network that gives districts access through existing procurement channels, no RFP required.
Where We’re Headed
We started where the pain was sharpest — compliance. But compliance was never the destination. When districts have confidence in their collections, something changes. Librarians start buying new titles again. Collections grow. Students get more choices.
That’s the arc: from compliance to visibility, from visibility to optimization, from optimization to a network that makes every district’s library smarter. And eventually — to a world where every student walks into a library and finds the book that changes their life.
